Fall Simmer Pot Recipe

“Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree.” ~ Emily Bronte

Hello Friends!

Today is a very special day in my household. It is the autumn solstice (aka the first day of fall). In honor of this very special day, I wanted to share a simmer pot recipe that I put together with the help of my beautiful friends, who gave wonderful recommendations on ingredients.

Simmer pots, also known as potpourri, are nothing new. Cultures from all over the world have used them to bring fresh scents into their homes and ward off negative energies (and man, do we need that more than ever right now). The wonderful thing about these scented pots is that you can make them from ingredients you have sitting around your house, so if you don’t have exactly the ingredients I share here today, it will still smell amazing. Don’t be afraid to try new things!

Ingredient Meaning

  • Sea salt – Seemingly an everyday table ingredient, salt has always been used for purification and protection.
  • Rosemary – A very nostalgic ingredient that welcomes protective energy.
  • Thyme – An herb that wraps you in its scent of good health and energy.
  • Sage – The ancient herb that has traditionally been used to ward against negative energy and establish protection and purification.
  • Vanilla – Brings that love energy type vibe.
  • Cinnamon – The pinnacle fall scent, and for good reason, encouraging prosperity and protection.
  • Cloves – A warm spice warding off negative energies while attracting abundance.
  • Nutmeg – Great in pumpkin pies, but also brings you good luck.
  • Orange – The happiness fruit that welcomes abundance.
  • Apple – You know what they say, an “apple a day…” brings healing and divine knowledge.

So think of this simmer pot as the ultimate good energy simmer! And the possibilities are endless!

Recipe

These are estimations, refer to the picture if you want an idea of how much I used because I used a mix of fresh and pre-ground ingredients.

  • 1/8 cup salt
  • 3 tablespoons rosemary
  • 1 tablespoon thyme
  • 3 tablespoons sage
  • Half a vanilla bean (you can use vanilla extract because vanilla beans are crazy expensive, at least in the United States for my global readers)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks or 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground or whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 orange (sliced)
  • 2 apples (sliced)

Again, all of these ingredients can be adjusted to your preference.

Instructions

  1. Grab your favorite fall themed pot or really any pot that you like to boil things in and fill it up about half way. Remember: this is about what is accessible to you. Add salt to the water and bring to a boil.
  2. Once the water is boiling, add all the ingredients and lightly combine.
  3. Bring water to a simmer and enjoy the sweet aroma.

Pro tip: You can simmer the water until it completely evaporates or you can wait till it cools, sift out the ingredients from the water and keep it for a body scent or air freshener. If you do turn it in to a spray just store in the fridge and it will keep for about a week.

Best Fall Wishes,

Shay
