“Our stories are in the walls, the streets, and the skies of San Antonio … art is just the language we use to tell them.” — Cruz Ortiz

History worth honoring
We are made of history. All of us. It is in the fabric of our families, our communities, and ultimately our world. Since homeschooling my daughter, I have been trying to figure out how to make history more hands-on and engaging, and how to be inclusive of her and others around her when learning. Oftentimes, history is taught as a list of dates, sanitized to fit a narrative. But that does not actually change the truth.
Celebrations like Hispanic Heritage Month allow us to slow down and honor those stories, the ones embedded in our communities that hold us together or can tear us apart. They give us a moment to honor the vibrancy of our communities, the art jumping along our streets, and the beauty of the people living around us. To honor Hispanic Heritage Month is to honor history itself.
In San Antonio, where I was born and pretty much raised, there are so many cultures that influence the city. Mexican American culture is laced into the city itself. The flavors of Hispanic culture dance in celebration of the amazing restaurants, artists, and writers who shape the streets every day.
