The Cost of Wonder

“Attention is the beginning of devotion.” ~Mary Oliver

When was it when we stopped looking to the stars for answers?

Was when our screens became brighter than our night sky

Devoured by a vortex of pride, overshadowing the brilliance of endless galaxies

There was a time when all we ever did was look to the stars

Civilizations emerged from the whispers of the beyond

Constellations mapped the spaces in between while the universe carved the roads

And then we just stopped

When was it when we stopped looking up?

Maybe it was our desire to see, but really I believe it to be our greed

A moment in time when we started gazing into the abyss of our own pockets

The sprinkles of stardust that thread the space close and beyond reduced to tiny papers of green

We all forgot that we are just particles of stardust…

Little difference between us in the sun or the forgotten planet Pluto

When was it when we stopped looking?

All the knowledge at our fingertips and we just stopped paying attention

Generations of wars rage on while we smite our neighbors because they weren’t the right shade of right

Meanwhile, the stars glitter on, not caring if you are beguiled by their light

Planets still orbit their cosmic fires, while some are lucky to have found their revolving satellites

And the earth, as it does, spins on…
