Brightly Grounded: Fall Simmer Pot Recipe

One of my all-time favorite fall traditions (however, I definitely make them year-round) is the simmer pot. These stovetop potpourris bring scents that lift you up and wrap you in a warm hug, simply by using the ingredients around your kitchen. In this post, I am going to give you the recipe for a warm woodsy simmer pot that was inspired by the Tarot cards I pulled for myself this morning.

Apparently, I am in need of some recentering, calmness, and focus… Which makes a lot of sense given I am in my third trimester of pregnancy. So let’s make a pot that focuses on clearing out the mental clutter.

Tarot Deck: Into the Hive by Kristoffer Hughes (Art by Nadia Turner)

Ingredients:

  • Oranges
  • Sage
  • Bay leaf
  • Cinnamon
  • Cardamom
  • Nutmeg
  • Vanilla
  • Honey
  • Pinch of Salt

Keep in mind that you do not have to use all of these ingredients, or you can use only some. Simmer pots are about the mood and elements you want to welcome into your home. All you have to do is fill your favorite pot up with water (either from your sink or saved-up moon water) and bring it to a boil with your added ingredients. It’s that simple! All you need is your love of yummy scents!

Symbolism:

Simmer pots are one of those practices that have linked cultures from all over the world. This practice of scented water, fresh fruits, and dried herbs has been used for generations, from Indigenous nations to the Middle East, Asia, and even in Europe. To this day, we carry these traditions that allow us the ability of using our “extra” ingredients in a place of abundance.

  • Oranges—You don’t always need fresh fruit to make a potent pot. Sometimes all we have is the peels, and honestly, that’s where the bulk of the scent comes from! One of my favorite ingredients is the wonderful citrus scent of the orange. Often associated with creativity and success, this ingredient brings a level of brightness into your home.
  • Sage—A wonderful herb often found in gardens has been popular in spiritual practices for a long time. This element of earth gives a sense of protection within.
  • Bay leaf—Not only wonderful in your favorite fall soup, this little leaf is a great addition in your scent pot. So throw it in and let it manifest its elements of protection around you.
  • Cinnamon—For a millennium, this spice has been used to attract positive energies of woodsy, warm abundance. Plus, it tastes great in an apple pie.
  • Cardamom—A magnetic spice that is technically an aphrodisiac wink wink. Its gentle scent enhances the protective energies of love. Who doesn’t want a whole lot of love in their home?
  • Nutmeg—Every simmer pot needs a little bit of luck, so throw this spice in and let it do its thing.
  • Vanilla—The powerful aromatics of healing and peace. Arguably the closest you can get to a magic bean.
  • Honey—What do many of us reach for when our throats are sore and our teas need sweetening? Our girl honey. Provided by nature’s most powerful little pollinating soldiers, this golden syrup brings all the healing signed and delivered with the seal of love.
  • Salt—Like in most spiritual practices, salt brings the elements of added protection and grounding to this already powerful simmer pot.

Enjoy!
